Dalda Foundation Scholarship

The Dalda Foundation Trust has paid for the education of talented students from poor families since 2008, right after matric. Every year more than 50,000 students apply and 400 to 500 are chosen, through a written test and an interview. Around 5,000 scholarships had been awarded by 2022, and 1,200 scholars have already finished professional degrees.

About this scholarship

Every year, soon after matric results, posters go up in colleges across Pakistan and more than 50,000 students fill in a Dalda Foundation form. Four to five hundred of them are chosen. The Dalda Foundation Trust has been doing this since 2008, and by 2022 it had awarded around 5,000 scholarships; 1,200 of its scholars have already finished professional degrees, and some have gone on to Fulbright and Chevening.

It is built for the student with 80% or more in matric whose family cannot pay for what comes next, and it pays for the next stage at a government institution: 80 to 85% of a year's real cost, worked out from DFT's own survey of colleges and universities in every province, covering fees, hostel, books, uniform and transport.

Selection is a written test at about 26 centres, with sealed papers and DFT staff supervising, followed by an interview. Most years the board result counts for 60% and DFT's test for 40%, and seats are split evenly between open merit and population-based quotas. The yearly window runs from 15 July to 30 October.

What the scholarship pays

You must study at a government institution. DFT reimburses 80 to 85% of what a year there costs, based on a survey it runs every year across colleges and universities in each province.

Beyond the money
Scholars get guidance and counselling, coaching, and free preparation for IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT and LSAT. DFT keeps a directory of international scholarships, and its alumni have gone on to Fulbright and Chevening.
If you are not selected
DFT encourages students who miss out to take technical and vocational training: electrical, AC and plumbing courses, IT (3D animation, graphic design, AI, cyber security), sales training, film and food services, and courses for girls.

Who can apply

  • At least 80% marks in your matric result.
  • Admission to a government (public) institution for your next stage of education.
  • Family monthly income and the family's home within DFT's set limits; the application form asks detailed questions to check your family's finances.

DFT also gives concessions for school and professional education to the families of daily-wage and service staff linked with its business.

How students are selected

  1. Announcement

    DFT announces the scholarship soon after matric results, on social media, through webinars and with posters in colleges across Pakistan.

  2. Application

    Fill in the form and attach your educational documents. Your college can send forms together, or you can post or email yours.

  3. Screening

    DFT checks every form, including the board and area, then posts admit cards with your roll number.

  4. Written test

    Held at about 26 centres in all provinces. Each centre has its own sealed paper, and DFT staff supervise.

  5. Interview

    Candidates who pass the test are interviewed, and the list is double-checked at DFT's head office.

How marks are weighed
In most years, 60% comes from your board result and 40% from DFT's test, and seats are split 50:50 between open merit and population-based quotas. Scholarships from outside donors are on merit alone.
Keeping it
To renew, you must reach the required result in your intermediate exams, or be promoted to the next level in professional education.

When can I apply for the Dalda Foundation scholarship?

DFT runs its process once a year, from 15 July to 30 October, starting soon after matric results.

What marks do I need?

At least 80% in matric, plus admission to a government college or university.

Is there a test for the Dalda scholarship?

Yes. A written test at about 26 centres across Pakistan, then an interview for those who pass. You get an admit card with your roll number by post.

Can I study at a private college?

No. Admission to a government institution is a requirement; DFT reimburses a share of the cost of studying there.

How much does the scholarship pay?

80 to 85% of the yearly cost of study at a government institution: fees, boarding, books and stationery, uniform and transport, worked out from DFT's yearly cost survey.

Do I have to apply every year?

No, but the scholarship is renewed only if you reach the required result in your intermediate exams, or move up to the next level of your professional degree.
