GREAT is a partial scholarship, and it is worth being clear about that from the start: each award takes at least £10,000 off the tuition of a one-year postgraduate course in the UK, and you pay the rest of the fee and your living costs. For many Pakistani students that is the difference between an offer they cannot use and a year in Britain.
For 2026-27 there are twelve, one at each of twelve universities, from UCL, Manchester and Glasgow to Bath, Leicester, Portsmouth and SOAS. They are jointly funded by the UK government's GREAT Britain campaign, the British Council and the university, and each university decides its own courses, deadline and selection.
What the British Council asks of a GREAT scholar is less about marks than engagement: a Pakistani citizen with a bachelor's and a real interest in the subject, who will attend a networking event in the UK, stay in touch and speak to future applicants about the experience.
