Global UGRAD Pakistan

Launched in 2010 by the US State Department, Global UGRAD sends Pakistani undergraduates for a semester at a US university or college: classes, community service and life on an American campus. USEFP runs it in Pakistan and IREX in the US, and especially wants students from disadvantaged backgrounds and remote areas, women, minorities and people with disabilities.

About this scholarship

Global UGRAD gives a Pakistani undergraduate one semester, four to five months, as a real student at an American university or college: a full course load, community service, cultural events and the everyday life of a US campus. It began in 2010, and the first batch of 100 fellows came home to finish their degrees in Pakistan.

USEFP runs it here and IREX places students in the US, and it goes out of its way to find people who would not otherwise get such a chance: students from disadvantaged backgrounds and remote areas, women, minorities and students with disabilities. The grant covers tuition, airfare, a living stipend and health insurance, and there is no application fee.

Timing is the whole game. You must be 18 to 24 and in your third or fourth semester of a bachelor's when the deadline falls, usually in the autumn, and you travel the following year. You can even study a subject outside your major while you are there.

It is a non-degree exchange: you earn academic credit in the US (check your own university's credit-transfer rules) and come back to finish your degree in Pakistan.

Who can apply

You need to be

  • A Pakistani citizen aged 18 to 24 on the deadline.
  • Enrolled in a bachelor's at a university or college in Pakistan, in your 3rd or 4th semester (14th year of education). Medical students apply in their second year.
  • From any discipline; you may even study a different subject in the US.
  • Committed to returning to your home university to finish your degree.

Not eligible

  • Graduate students.
  • Dual US-Pakistani nationals or US permanent residents.
  • Employees of Fulbright, the State Department or USAID, and their close family.
  • Anyone who has already been to the US on a J visa or a US government-funded grant.

How to apply

  1. Create an account

    Apply online on USEFP's website when the call opens. There is no application fee.

  2. Upload documents

    Current and older transcripts (with the grading scale if CGPA isn't shown), a personal statement, and certificates of extracurricular activities from the last five years.

  3. Review and interview

    USEFP reviews applications and interviews shortlisted students on academic merit, leadership potential and adaptability.

  4. English test and NOC

    Only selected students take USEFP's TOEFL or Duolingo English Test and submit reference letters and an NOC from their university.

The whole cycle takes seven to eight months. You receive an automatic email with your application ID; please don't call to check. Questions go to undergraduate@usefp.org.

Which semester do I need to be in?

Your 3rd or 4th semester of a bachelor's (the 14th year of education). Medical students apply in their second year.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL to apply?

No. Only selected candidates take the TOEFL or Duolingo English Test, arranged by USEFP.

Is there an application fee?

No. Global UGRAD has no application fee.

Can I stay in the US afterwards?

No. You must return to Pakistan under the programme's terms and J-1 visa rules, and finish your degree.

Can I study a different subject in the US?

Yes. The programme encourages you to explore new academic interests during your semester.
